Site is working its way back up

Slowly but surely, I'm getting this thing back on track. Myspace has taken off so the main site's priority took a back seat, but I'd like to start steering people in this direction for a fuller experience.

The site is back on track.

If you see this, it means I've gotten around to re-coding the news/comments code for the site.

Comments / Poll

The comments are now working, so go ahead and write something. We still need more poll entries. We only have 29.

News is up

The news section is now fully functional, but is not particularly pleasing to the eye. I'll work to get this looking better - the news browser will have a scroll bar or some ability to limit the number of news items on the main page, with the option to view older news.

The news section should also optionally display the author of the item, if its been given.

Color Scheme

The site's color scheme is horrendous...or non-existant. The colors are fairly haphazard and don't compliment each other well enough. I'll be trying to devise something that works with our current logo design and images.

Documentation section

Instead of working on structuring the documentation section, and then filling it up with articles, I've decided to approach it the other way.

A lot of written material is on its way up - once there's enough of a pattern going, I'll figure out how to integrate a database structure with the ability for people to comment and maybe even edit the articles themselves (or at least to submit related links).

Working

Taken from myspace blog

Justin is lifeguarding and Faisal is engineering until August 31st. By then we'll have accumulated a bundle of cash, which we can spend on musical purposes. These jobs will be taking up most of our time until then, so don't expect new recordings, but do expect old unheard recordings to appear.

Wikis for the site

I've realized that the concept of a wiki is exactly what I wanted to establish at this site - content that can be edited by anyone. There would be limits to what would be editable by whom, but general articles and discussions about music, business, theory, etc. should be open to all.

So I'm in the process of testing a few open source wikis to see if any pre-existing ones have enough features and can be nicely integrated into the site. I'm looking for one with RSS and one where the template is fully customizable without too much work. Ratings, comments, and other features are a plus. This way, information about our music could be presented as wiki pages and commented and rated, as we've had planned for a while.

Unreleased demos.

Expect many unheard recordings from the past 5 years to surface during the next weeks. I hope to start a consistent stream within the next few days.

The songs will appear in the music section at this site, as well as on one of the myspace sites (though not the main one). I haven't decided exactly how to organize this, but I'd like send out invitations for people join the myspace site for the old material so that they can be easily informed with every upload.

I'd also like to start implementing RSS at the main site so that people without myspace, or who don't like to use it, can be updated about new songs. We may also start a mailing list for this purpose, since RSS isn't quite used by all.

FinalWiki

We're testing FinalWiki, our very own open-content site where you can find out everything you never wanted to know about us.

Register with an email address (don't worry, we won't send you anything but a confirmation request, and will absolutely not give your email address to anyone) and you will soon be able to edit many of the pages yourself, as well as rate our songs, our articles, etc.

The templates aren't set up yet, and its quite disorganized - but feel free to fiddle around and leave us suggestions.

Recommended Artists

We've compiled a list of all the artists we've been recommending from our myspace profile. These are musical artists that are probably not well-known, and who we've discovered through the internet.

Give them a listen! Recommended Artists

CD quality versions

In case you want to experience the uncompressed, lossless version of "the best people", I've uploaded a FLAC encoded version of the song:

FLAC of "the best people"

FLAC is an encoding format like mp3 is - the difference is that no audio information is lost in the compression from wav, so the file remains at CD quality, which is the quality that we initially mixdown all of our recordings. The file is half the size of a wav file (and a bit more tha 4 times the size of a 128kbps mp3, what seems to be the standard bitrate) so it takes up less space on your computer, and will save us a lot of bandwidth when people download from our site.

You can listen to a FLAC file directly on Windows using Winamp, or you can download a plugin to use Windows Media Player.

To hear the song with iTunes requires that you extract the wav file froom the FLAC one. On windows this can be done by downloading the FLAC interface, which allows you to convert wav to flac and flac to wav. On macs this can be done using MacFLAC.

I believe all of these softwares and plugins are free. We intend to release all of our songs in both mp3 and FLAC format, so if you have a problem with the quality of mp3s, you may want to give this a shot.

Demo CD and short break.

As you may already know, Justin is still in Pittsburgh trying to earn some security before coming over to Montreal.

In the meantime, we've been planning a demo CD to be distributed to a handful of people. The CD has been printed and is being shipped to Justin right now.

If anyone is really interested, I can arrange to send a CD to you for a very small cost. I would only be able to do a few of these, though.

I have some new songs almost ready to be uploaded, but I'm going to Kuwait for 2.5 weeks for a big family reunion, so won't be able to put the final touches until I get back.

Happy wintering!

Radon check - ok!

After realizing that spending so many hours in an unventilated room in our basement (the studio) could be harmful to my health, I decided to order a diy radon test kit. The results so far are good - only 1.4 pCi/L average over a week, which is within the average range for indoor air and well below the critical 4 pCi/L at which your chances of getting lung cancer are relatively high.

Not the most interesting news at the surface level, but it could have meant no new Final Boss music until a new recording spot was found (which I couldn't afford right now).

In other not so interesting news, recording experiments are always moving forward. I have been burying my head in recording and mixing articles and tweaking set ups to find that "ultimate sound" we've been looking for since last year. Always getting closer.
